Europe is the world’s third most populous and second-smallest continent, covering about 2% of the Earth’s surface (6.8% of its land area). Of Europe’s states, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while Vatican City is the smallest. Europe’s overall economy has been significantly affected by the latest recession: In the first quarter of 2009, the unemployment rate in the EU27 for those aged 15–24 was 18.3%. Nonetheless, with almost 500 million citizens the EU alone generates an estimated 30% share (US$18.4 trillion in 2008) of the nominal gross world product. This becomes 37% when considering non-member countries (Switzerland, Turkey, Norway, Russia, etc.).

Geographically, what actually constitutes Europe is somewhat arbitrary – sometimes including Turkey, Israel and the “Eurasian” countries within the Caucasus region…sometimes not. Religion is often the determining factor, but to maintain a more effective marketing overview, an attempt has been made here to draw this elusive boundary according to economic, cultural, political and even historical criteria. Therefore, since Greenland is an autonomous Danish protectorate it is included here as part of Europe, not North America. Also included here are Israel and Turkey – and therefore Cyprus. Included for the same reasons are Georgia and Armenia (along with the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region of 95% Armenian ethnicity), while Azerbaijan’s cultural and economic ties place it in the Middle East. Russia, spanning 11 time zones, is part European, part Asian – the line being the Ural River.

Media
The media landscape in Europe is mainly defined by the individual EU markets – open, free, diverse reporting by both well-established and newly-emerged news sources; a mix of both state-owned and private media. Growth in the online sector is still very rapid. Most other European countries can claim the same state of affairs, the strongest exceptions being the heavily state-run Belarus market and Russia, where press freedom has yet to achieve European levels. Publicity and promotion throughout a changing Europe can best be carried out with a strong, vibrant network of local specialists. MilestoneMedia personally delivers your message to thousands of media outlets throughout Europe.
