Since gaining its independence from the Soviet Union, Belarus largely kept Soviet-style economic and political policies despite objections from Western governments. 51.2% of Belarusians are employed by state-controlled companies, 47.4% are employed by private Belarusian companies (of which 5.7% are partially foreign-owned), and 1.4% are employed by foreign companies. Still, Belarus is an emerging market with economic growth rates of up to 10%, even through the last recession, and key economic policy changes – most notably encouraging foreign direct investment with a decree in 2008 abolishing the “golden share rule”. Belarus is also on favourable terms with neighbouring Russia, and benefits from the transit of oil and gas to the EU.

Media
During the first 10 years of Lukashenko’s presidency, most of the Belarusian media outlets (newspapers, radio, television) were brought under the control of the state. Citizens are legally guaranteed the freedom of speech and information, however the executive still largely controls media content and oversees senior editorial appointments. Journalists are jailed regularly, especially during elections. Regardless, with well over 250 broadcast media outlets, internet usage at over 60% and strengthening ties with its EU neighbours, Belarus is certainly emerging as an interesting publicity marketplace.
