flag_bosniaBosnia and Herzegovina is located in Southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. With Croatia to the north, west and south, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the southeast, Bosnia-Herzegovina is almost totally landlocked except for 6 kilometers of Adriatic coastline at the town of Neum. Thankfully, Bosnia and Herzegovina has an abundance of natural resources.

Formerly one of the six federal units constituting the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina gained its independence during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Following 5 years of internal strife, the country is now divided among three ethnic groups known as “constituent peoples”: Bosniaks, the largest of the three, Serbs and Croats, distributed throughout three politically decentralized governing entities, called cantons: the Federation of Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska, with the Brčko dsitrict as a de-facto third entity. In English, all citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina are usually refered to as “Bosnians”.

Bosnia’s economy is driven by manufacturing and, due to an overwleming reliance on foreign investment, to a lesser extent, banking. Although ostensibly transforming its economy into a market-oriented system, and a potential candidate for EU and NATO membership, the country faces unusual problems – the greatest of which is the 1995 Dayton Peace Accord, brokered by NATO. It gives the Office of the High Representative for BiH (OHR) a mandate to impose laws and intervene in any sphere of political or economic life in the country (including the media). The resulting power struggles have hindered market reforms in an already centrally-planned economy.

Media
On the other hand, clear laws are set out obliging media to remain independent and largely in private hands. Bosnia-Herzegovina has well over 150 radio and television broadcasting stations, and well over 500 print media outlets (of these, 6 are daily newspapers). Internet media is growing rapidly along with the increase in mobile access. Given Croatia’s expected accession to the EU as well as solid progress in Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina is expected to play an ever-greater support role in these economies – thus securing its continued growth as a consumer market.
