 The Republic of Bulgaria is a country in the Balkans in south-eastern Europe. Bulgaria borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the Danube River), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south. The Black Sea defines the extent of the country to the east.
Bulgaria functions as a parliamentary democracy and is a member of the European Union, NATO, UN and the World Trade Organization.
Bulgaria has an industrialised, open, free-market economy, with a large, moderately advanced private sector and a number of strategic state-owned enterprises. Its economy relies primarily on industry and agriculture, although the services sector increasingly contributes to GDP growth. Tourism is also growing rapidly. Geographically, it is very important as five of the ten Trans-European corridors run through its territory.
