The French Republic is an EU member state west of Germany with several overseas territories and islands located on other continents. It is area-wise the largest EU country, bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain and Andorra. France’s overseas departments and collectivities also share land borders with Brazil and Suriname (bordering French Guiana), and the Netherlands Antilles (bordering Saint-Martin). Since the end of WWII, the government has made efforts to integrate more and more with Germany, both economically and politically. Today they form what is often referred to as the “core” of countries promoting more integration of the European Union. Media On the national level, the French are not avid newspaper readers: only around 16% of all adults read the big dailies. This inequality is made up for on the regional and local level, however, with top-selling dailies and weeklies. Internet users in France top Germany at over 70%, so more and more people are getting their news online while television and radio are still holding steady.
