Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8, G20, OECD, and the WTO. It is a major power with the world’s fourth largest economy by nominal GDP, and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. Most impressively, Germany is the world’s largest exporter (1.13 trillion in trade volume) and the second largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world, while its military expenditure ranks sixth. Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in many fields. The service sector contributes around 70% of the total GDP and industry 29%. Most of the country’s products are in engineering, especially in automobiles, machinery, metals, and chemical goods. Media Besides being the home of the Gutenberg printing press, some of the first newspapers started here roughly 400 years ago. Today, despite recent declines, Germany has hundreds of local, regional and national newspapers. Over 66% of Germans use the Internet – access to and participation in German-language news sites, blogs, social network sites and forums is above average. The individual regions also play a strong role, each having its own well-finded public station – some of which are broadcast nationwide and internationally. As the most highly-developed consumer market in Europe overall, active publicity and PR in Germany is a must.
