The medium-sized Hungarian economy is economically, structurally, politically, and institutionally open. Like most Eastern European economies, it experienced market liberalisation in the early 1990s as part of a transition away from Soviet communism. Today, the private sector accounts for over 80% of GDP. Despite being one of the hardest-hit European countries during the last financial crisis, Hungary managed to weather the crisis with strong trade, fiscal, monetary, investment, business and labor freedoms, and is still one of the 15 most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Dramatic changes have taken place since 1989, not least due to the country’s independence from the Soviet Union. Hungary’s press is free everall, excepting personally harmful content and “hate speech”. Most newspapers are now foreign-owned, with circulation experiencing a slow downward trend. Television is growing: 98 percent of Hungarian households have a television and spend more time in front of it. Radio is experiencing a similar trend, with an increase in private stations. Of course, Internet is seeing the greatest upward trend: Currently, 60% of Hungarians are regularly online, news sites and blogs are visited regularly, and social networking is on a par with the rest of Central Europe.
