 The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small country of 2,586 square kilometers (999 sq. mi.) surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany. Luxembourg is a parliamentary representative democracy with a constitutional monarch; it is ruled by a Grand Duke and is the world’s only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy. The country has a highly-developed economy and the world’s highest GDP per capita.Luxembourg is a founding member of the EU, UN, NATO, OECD, Benelux and the Western European Union. Luxembourg’s stable, high-income economy enjoys low inflation and low unemployment. The industrial sector has diversified from steel into chemicals, rubber and other products. During the past decades, growth has been high in the financial sector with banking and other financial services accounting for most economic output. It is the world’s second-largest investment fund center, the most important private banking center after Switzerland, and Europe’s leading center for reinsurance companies. Moreover, the Luxembourgish government has tried to attract internet start-ups. Skype, Jajah and eBay are only a few of the many internet companies that have shifted their local or global headquarters to Luxembourg. Media Luxembourg has six daily newspapers supported by state subsidies and affiliated with political parties. RTL holds a virtual monopoly in television, and the largest share in radio.
