The Portuguese Republic is in southwestern Europe, sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Spain to the north and east. It is the westernmost mainland European country, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are also part of Portugal. It is a developed country and with one the world’s highest quality-of-life rankings, and an EU and UN member.
Portugal has long been a highly globalized economy. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance between England (and now UK) and Portugal is the oldest alliance still in force in the world, signed in June 13, 1373. During the 15th and 16th centuries it was one of the world’s economic and military superpowers with possessions in Africa, Asia, and South America. Today, Portugal’s economic development is focused on exports, private investment and development of the high-tech sector. Business services have overtaken more traditional industries such as textiles, clothing, footwear, cork (of which Portugal is the world’s leading producer), wood products and beverages. Tourism is an important sector, and fishing has always been a key industry. It is also home to the largest dammed lake in Western Europe, the world’s first commercial wave farm and the world’s largest solar energy plant.
