 The Kingdom of Spain is an EU founding member in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, with the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east (excepting Gibraltar), France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay to the north, and Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean and to the west. Spain also presides over the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic off the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa – Ceuta and Melilla – that border Morocco.
Spain is a parliamentary republic democracy under a constitutional monarchy. It is a developed country with a high living standard. According to the World Bank, Spain’s economy is the ninth largest worldwide and the fifth largest in Europe but at the same time the 3rd-largest world investor. It is a member of the United Nations, European Union, NATO, OECD, and WTO.
